Chapter 21
Thursday was a regular day; up and exercise, run with Dick, shower, shave, etc. Bill the gate guard at the studio just waved as I drove onto the studio lot. Makeup and costuming didn’t take long, although they did trim my hair. It was important that my hair didn’t grow an inch from the beginning of a scene to the end.
Well, it was important to them that the movie was consistent. I thought it would be cool to go from being right handed in one scene to being left handed in the next. Maybe we could have a hunchback and move his hump from side to side. Funny to think about, but it would never be done. The censors would let it through, but no one liked things that crude, unless of course they were teenage boys.
The only place we could get stuff that good was Mad Magazine, I seldom missed an issue since I discovered it last year. Recently, the thought had occurred to me, that one way I would know I was a success, is if they picked on me.
Everyone was serious about work today. It was getting near the end, and everyone was ready to wrap it up. Side conversations were about the next job, the lack of a next job, and who might be hiring. Since my next role was already signed, I stayed out of those conversations. I didn’t have enough influence to get anyone a job, and I didn’t want to rub mine in.
At lunch time, a runner hunted me up. There was a message from Mr. Baxter waiting for me up front. I finished my tacos and strolled up to the front office. The message was to call him, so I took a chance that he might be in at lunch time.
He wasn’t, but a secretary gave me a number for him. It was at an upscale restaurant. When I told them who I was calling for, they asked me to hold. In a few minutes, Mr. Baxter picked up the phone. I apologized for making him get up from his lunch. He told me not to worry they had brought the phone to his table.
That really impressed me, I hadn’t ever heard of such a thing. That was so cool, not having to get up for a phone call! Anyway, he was a little cryptic as he was speaking in public, but he told me, the guy with the blue eyes had made an offer. I took what you told me seriously. They opened with a take it or leave it, so I took it.
It isn’t a good deal. It works out to a penny a sale. It is going to be on an album and the B side of a forty five. If the album goes gold by selling a million copies, you would get ten thousand dollars. No way is the album going gold, the same for the forty five. The song is like what he did in High Hopes, upbeat and bouncy.
